
Tennis has lost a great player. At 29 years, Marat Safin announced the end of his career, after being defeated wednesday, in the second round of the Paris Masters Series tournament, by Juan Martin Del Potro, winner of this year’s edition the U.S. Open. The russian lost 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. “Pure talent”, Safin has alternated over time thrilling matches and fantastic shots with fluctuating trends. Because of his volcanic temperament, Marat had a lot of passions, most experts concluded that only his emotions prevented him to dominate world tennis for a long time. At the end of the match, the Russian player recived a symbolic last ball hit during the game with Martin del Potro, in the presence of some players who wanted to bring tribute to Safin, Albert Costa, Novak Djokovic, and Gilles Simon.
He was world number one for nine weeks in late 2000 and early 2001.
